FRESH BATCH – June 10th 2019

ET_FreshBatch_June10_2019

Hello music lovers! It’s time for another FRESH BATCH of awesome underground music!

This week has proven to be ULTRA underground – with quite a few records and projects being “Self Released”. Seeing this trend got me thinking to myself – what really is the purpose of a record label these days? Certainly the role has changed in the past years and decades, leading many independent producers to push releases without any sort of Label backing. The self-release of projects is DIY to the core – and even if there isn’t a stated label presence, many of these releases are propelled forward by word of mouth and pure sonic interest.

So what does all this mean? What is the takeaway!? NOTHIN! Just a bunch of great music, so strap in and listen up folks, there’s gold in them-there hills!

Different Worlds Compilation, by Drift Deeper Recordings.

a1642655264_10

Different Worlds is a new Various Artists compilation, put together and released by the UK’s Drift Deeper Recordings. Gathering an international roster of producers, Different Worlds does a magnificent job of highlighting the subtle differences in Deep-House style and interpretation from around the globe.

With a healthy 13 tracks, Different Worlds is a lovely long-player with a great energy. It has introduced me to a few deep-house producers I was unaware of, so I definitely encourage giving this one a listen! You can stream the whole thing via Bandcamp or purchase a digital copy from the label!

Varsovie, by Odes Of The Kabatians

a3237882170_10

British-Colombian Label Silent Season brings us a chilled out ambient-techno treat in the form of Varsovie, by Odes of the Kabatians.

Varsovie is a part of the Labels “SSX“, or Silent Season 10-Year Anniversary, series, which focuses on textural ambience and geography. This installment is no disappointment, with 5 expansive tracks that are all both deep and delicious.

You can grab the digital download via the Labels Bandcamp page, or head over to Juno Records for a copy on wax.

Silent Season 10 Year Collection 2007-2017 [SSX10]

The Silent Season 10 Year Anniversary collection celebrates a decade of deeper electronic music. This special edition vinyl series features artists whose music continues to inspire the Silent Season journey from 2007-2017.

The SSX series showcases elemental textures found in the nature surroundings of Vancouver Island. The collection features 2 different sleeve colour editions: Dark & Light. The first 5 EPs for Winter share a dark smoke transparent vinyl in a custom 10th anniversary black sleeve emboldened with the Silent Season Tree of Life.

The first 5 x 12″s will be available at Juno and other fine record shops starting Spring 2017. The vinyl series will roll out over the year with the remaining 5 eps coming out in the Fall.

Interstellar, by Lars Leonhard

a1163981903_10

One of my favorite Dub-Techno Producers Lars Leonhard has dropped a new project titled “Interstellar”. Not to be confused with the Hollywood blockbuster from a few years back, this “Interstellar” is deep, dark and delicious. 10 tracks of brilliantly sculpted techno tunes floating at a comfortable 120 bmp. I have always been impressed with Lars’ ability to blend darkness and melody to create unique atmospheres, and this album is no exception!

You can download the album via Bandcamp. You can also get nearly 20 of Lars’ albums bundled together at an insane discount, definitely something worth looking into if you find yourself enjoying this release.

Wooded Ghost, by Pemë

Delicious new dubby-electronics from Etoka Records.

“Mysterious and puzzling sound structures entering unknown landscapes, surrounded by hidden paths and irregular shades.
The Artists are reflecting their inspirations by an old Japanese legend about spirits, called KODAMA, that lived in over hundred year old trees. Fascinated by wildness and beauty of nature, Pemë express their vision through their music where every composition reveals its own story.”

The Tales of the Sagebrush Wind, by Atmeo

a0195712713_10

Energostatic Records of Kiev brings us a phenomenal little project from Marc Atmost / Atmeo, The Tales of the Sagebrush Wind.

Only 3 tracks long, this little EP is simultaneously packed with pulsing energy and relaxing vibes. The long-form tracks fluctuate and evolve between textural ambience and hypnotic rhythms. Such as the first track, which takes a full 8-minutes to ramp-up to a serious groove, only to be whisked off into the aether. All in all it is quite satisfying, and I certainly wish it were a longer project! You can grab the digital download via Bandcamp.

“If you reveal your secrets to the wind, you should not blame the wind for revealing them to the trees.”

Microscopy, by Sven Laux

a2582402995_10

Not a new release but worthy of mention and recommendation, Microscopy by Sven Laux is an exercise in micro-house that is simply a pleasure to drink-in. Only 5 tracks long, its a great little tease that leaves you wanting more. Highly recommended, grab the Digital Download via Bandcamp.

Whoever said “good things come in small packages” must have been talking about Sven Laux’s microcomposition. A leader in this new wave of music, Laux’s is a particular breed of minimal that you have to think about to truly understand. Listen at a distance, and it’s the kind of skittering beats that have earned Laux titles like “micro symphonist.” Listen closely, and you can hear every intricate cog turning. Ever a lover of the obscure and the weird, Laux swings from animated min tech to moments of languid ambience with ease, as evidenced in his latest effort, KSR034. The five-track release under Klangscheiben Records pairs peculiar samplings and interjections with those signature clicks, beeps, and small sounds. Micro symphony, indeed.
