Home Theater is an adorably nostalgic project with both feet firmly planted in historic midi sounds. Harkening back to the days of home computers and retro Roland sound modules. CGI Gold incorporates several of these motifs that you may just recognize.

Even if the riffs are not familiar, the uninitiated listener will still feel a unique energy from the chords and tones used. Huge synthesized drumkits smash and bash behind artificial yet wholesome midi tones. Sound wise – everything is ripped straight from the 90’s, soaked in strange summer vibes of yesteryear.

It’s a fun listen from start to finish, with plenty of energy and grooves to keep things interesting. While not necessarily Vaporwave, Home Theater sees use of many techniques like conservative sample flipping, chopping and stuttering. The core midi flavor is never unhinged however, no matter how hazy or sliced the sounds are, they always find their way back to those nostalgic rhythms and tones.

Fancy Feast (blue label), by Fester’s Quest

Brought to us by the ever-amazing Bogus Collective, we have a lovely full-length classic vaporwave album by Fester’s Quest titled FANCY FEAST (blue label). Now – was I attracted to listen to this album simply because there was a cat on the cover art? Yes. But as anticipated the sounds within are clever and enjoyable – utilizing a very classic and traditional flavor of vaporwave, FQ takes the listeners hand gently and guides us through the fuzzy haze. The project is overwhelmingly instrumental, lacking the pitched-down and chopped vocals one would expect in such vaporsounds – instead opting for melodies and riffs on the guitar. The result is quite nice, making this record great for background listening where you want just a little more interesting flavor in your ambience.

New sounds presented by the BOGUS // Collective team – WORLSD.com by Marlowave2099 is a long-playing epic of ambient vapor and mallsoft styles. Concepts of a lost and lonely virtual world swirl in the minds eye – logging on, creating an avatar, and floating directionless in the cybersea. Some really nice treatment of melodies and moods here – sometimes the soundtrack gets a bit spooky, but never overtly dark. Marlowave2099 has done a great job of constructing a world with these sounds…
